Written 2/5/97 Oil Change is a first in many ways. It's the first Internet subscription product that I've purchased that I've enjoyed. It's the first Internet-only product that I've found really compelling. And, most importantly, it's the first computer product ever recommended to me by my Mom! Oil Change is a software program that runs on your machine. It checks for all the Windows system drivers (DLLs, etc.) and software programs that you run (like WinFax, Exchange, Golf, whatever) and then logs into the Internet and checks its database for updates. If it finds an update has been registered, it presents it in a list where you can select and download it. For about half the updates, Oil Change will be able to install it for you itself, the rest you'll do manually. In the world of Windows, updated drivers can make a big deal to your machine. Companies are releasing updates to their software every day on the Internet, and these updates can make your machine run faster and solve some of those niggling bugs. The problem is, every company has their web page, most of which you've never seen, and you have to keep checking back there to see if a new update has come out. Oil Change handles this for you, by scouring the Net themselves and creating a database of links. When you download an updated item from Oil Change, you're not actually downloading it from them, you're being redirected to the web site that you get the patch from. It's great because you know that the update came from the company directly, and yet you get to download it from a nice, consistent interface. Oil Change is my number #1 must have utility software. |
