Overview

Out-of-towners have a few options on making your way to Two Harbors, MN.

The first option is to fly into Duluth, rent a car, and drive about an hour to Two Harbors.

A less expensive option is to fly into Minneapolis, rent a car, and drive about 3.5 hours to Two Harbors.

Whichever way you decide to travel, the drive up will be spectacular, with views of turning leaves and Lake Superior.

You won’t be alone! This is a very popular time of year to travel to the North Shore of Lake Superior. Please make hotel arrangements as early as possible. We have blocked rooms in several hotels to try to give you an option of where to stay.

The wedding ceremony and reception will take place at The Grand Superior Lodge. The wedding party will be staying at the lodge. We have reserved a bunch of rooms. There are many different sorts of rooms available, including rooms in the main lodge, log cabins, and log houses right on the lake with several bedrooms. Some of the cabins and suites offer a sitting area with a pull-out couch.

The wedding block of rooms expired on 8/19/2003. However, they do have some rooms left. The Pet Cabin has already been taken, so no pets allowed. Sorry!

Notes

This hotel doesn't win any awards for charm. Instead of looking out at the beauties of Lake Superior, it faces the Lakeview Cemetary. However, it's clean, fairly quiet, and close. It's also one of the least expensive hotels in the area and has no minimum stay.

There is one room left. Please contact the bride if you would like it.

*Indicates that we were able to reserve rooms at this hotel under "Kleiner." The reservations expired 8/19/2003, but some hotels may still have rooms available.

Don't like any of these choices? Please take a look at these lists of hotels on the North Shore, mostly in the Two Harbors area. Make sure to check the distance away from the Grand Superior Lodge -- the North Shore is really long!

There are a bunch of things to do in Duluth; shopping the galleries at Canal Park, exploring the new Aquarium or Canal Park Museum, watching the ore boats slip under the Ariel Bridge.

Aerial Lift Bridge

And if the wedding is too quite and sedate, you can always go watch the planes at the Duluth Airshow, happening the same weekend! Aren't we lucky?

Betty's Pies is a big hit in Two Harbors, as is Gooseberry Falls Park which is very close. Did you know Two Harbors was the birth place of 3M (you know, those yellow sticky notes) in 1902? There's also a Tugboat you can tour, the Edna G. Also recommended, the beautiful Lighthouse Point and Harbor Museum.

In case you doubted the bride's Duluth origins (after all, how often have you heard a Minnesota accent come out of her?), her aunt wanted to point out a few things. Firstly, Betty (of Betty's Pies fame) was a good friend and schoolmate of Laurie's grandmother Doris and her sister Shirley. Laurie has eaten many a pie at Bettie's Pies! Secondly, Laurie's grandfather Dougal designed the original gift shop at the Spilt Rock Lighthouse! It's been remodeled a few times since then...

For great updates on the fall leaf display, bird migration, and suggested driving tours to peep the leaves, try the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior Visitor Guide, or the Explore Minnesota Guide to the North Shore. The bride's favorite guide includes a mile-by-mile listing of things to do: the Lake Superior Drive Guide.

The state parks in the area are numerous and beautiful. Gooseberry Falls is only 1.5 miles up the shore from the Grand Superior Lodge.

Hiking

There is some really beautiful hiking along Lake Superior, especially along the Superior Hiking Trail. Many hotels have a drop-off and pick-up service of some sort - or you could coordinate with a few other guests and sprinkle your cars along the trail for a great day of hiking. There is also a Superior Shuttle.

Fishing

You're in luck! A bunch of fish are in season in September. There are outfitters in the area - just make sure you get a fishing license.

Boating

Most hotels offer canoes and/or kayaks that you can use for free or for a small fee.

Gooseberry Falls

Alpine Slide, Mountain Tram, and Moutain Biking

There's all sorts of fun stuff to do at Lutsen Mountains, at the Sawtooth Mountain Park about another 45 minutes up the shore from Two Harbors.
