GERMANY

The entrance gate to the Dachau Concentration camp in Germany. Cruelly, it says "work will set you free."
The haunting memorial at Dachau.
Thanks to Gabi and Marcus for letting us stay with them in Augsburg. Congratulations on your recent wedding!
Mad King Ludwig's fairy-tale castle. It's the one that Disney used as a model for their castle in Disneyland.
The Romantic Road leads to Rottenburg, a beauifully preserved walled city.
The ramparts behind the city wall can transport you back in time. During the war, much of the wall was destroyed, so to rebuild, the city sold metered sections of it to anyone who wanted to buy one. Now there are plaques with the owners' names all along the wall.
Little did we know that Tricia is a first class photographer, and the sunset was even better in person.
Baden Baden is known all over Europe as the place to go for a spa and luxury indoor swimming experiences. Do not miss the change to go, or you will regret it! We liked it so much we stayed an extra day.
Brandenburg gate still marks the line between east and west Berlin, even though the wall is now gone.
The Checkpoint Charlie Museum displays many unusual methods used to escape East Berlin. An adult woman hid in this radio, for just one example.
Kris breaks off our own little piece of history.
The Pergamon Museum is Berlin's best, with an entire Greek temple reconstructed under it's roof.
We arrived at the Rhine just in time to participate in this huge celebration they have called "The Rhine on Fire" The castles are all lit up with red lights, and fireworks are set off all along the river.
We quickly drove down the river and picked a nice spot to watch the parade of boats pass by. All the boats are decorated with lights and streamers.
The next day we headed on a boat ourselves and cruised up the Rhine and back. The view of the castles from the water is spectacular.
Here is a view of the small town we stayed in. Notice the castle up the hillside! The whole Rhine river is lined with castles just like this.
