The Hornblower Saga by C. S. Forester

About the Series

This series follows the career of Horatio Hornblower from lowly midshipman on up through the ranks. Although Mr. Hornblower has his quirks and weaknesses, they never seem to pose any serious problems. The first couple of novels in the series are more collections of short-stories that only have Mr. Hornblower in common instead of a continuous, worked-out stream of fictional history. Later books are novels in themselves. I haven't read the entire saga yet, but so-far, the series doesn't resonate as well as the O'Brian-Aubrey series.
